Why is photobiomodulation (PBM) therapeutically relevant,
and what are the actual effects?
The primary target, or “chromosphere”, for PBM is the photoreceptor cytochrome C oxidase, which is bound to the inner membrane of the powerhouse of the cell: the mitochondria. On the cellular level, the absorption of light by the chromosphere increases the release of adenosine triphosphate (ATP), reactive oxygen species and the homologation of nitric oxide.
 
 
PBM therapy may help support the increase in Nitric Oxide and ATP production.
Nitric oxide is the major signaling molecule of the body. It regulates the muscle tone of the blood vessels allowing them to expand for better blood flow to the tissues, organs and muscles.
